Grantees in the News: Research by 7 AFAR grantees in Aging Cell shows how removing senescent cells alleviates causes of diabetes

On March 25, 2019, Aging Cell published research co-authored by AFAR experts Judy Campisi, PhD, Eduardo Chini, MD, PhD, James L. Kirkland MD, PhD, Nathan LeBrasseur, PhD, Allyson Palmer, M.D, PhD, Marissa Schafer, PhD, and Ming Xu, PhD exploring how removal of senescent 'zombie cells' alleviates causes of diabetes in obese mice. The research shows that senolytic drugs hold promise as a treatment of age-related disease.

Dr. Campisi is a 2009 AFAR Grant for Junior Faculty recipient.

Dr Chini is a 2007 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Breakthroughs in Gerontology (BIG) Award recipient.

Dr. Kirkland MD, PhD is AFAR’s President-Elect and a 2012 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Breakthroughs in Gerontology (BIG) Award recipient.

Dr. LeBrasseur is a 2002 AFAR Diana Jacobs Kalman/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging recipient.

Dr. Palmer is a 2015 Diana Jacobs Kalman/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging recipient.

Dr. Schafer is a 2016 Irene Diamond Fund/AFAR Postdoctoral Transition Awards in Aging recipient.

Dr. Xu is a 2017 Irene Diamond Fund/AFAR Postdoctoral Transition Awards in Aging recipient, and a 2014 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowships in Aging Research recipient.
