AFAR Scientific Awards of Distinction

AFAR presents four scientific awards annually to members of the aging research community whose outstanding work advances the field. The honorary scientific awards are named for visionary scientists whose leadership made AFAR and aging research what it is today. Nominations are by invitation only.

Vincent Cristofalo Rising Star Award in Aging Research:

Daniel W. Belsky, PhD
Associate Professor of Epidemiology in the Mailman School of Public Health (Department of Epidemiology and Robert N. Butler Columbia Aging Center) at Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC)


The 2025 Cristofalo Award will be presented on Monday, May 12, 2025 at the American Aging Association (AGE) 53rd Annual Meeting in Anchorage, Alaska. AFAR will host an award ceremony, and Dr. Belsky will present a lecture.

George M. Martin Lifetime Achievement in Mentoring Award:
Arlan Richardson, PhD

Professor in the Department of Biochemistry & Physiology and the Donald W. Reynolds Endowed Chair of Aging Research at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences


The 2025 Martin Award will be presented on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. AFAR will host an awards ceremony and reception, and Dr. Richardson will share remarks.

The Terrie Fox Wetle Rising Star Award in Health Services and Aging Research:

Lauren Hunt, PhD, RN, FNP
Associate Professor at the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies in the School of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF)

The 2025 Wright Award will be presented on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. AFAR will host an awards ceremony and reception, and Dr. Hunt will present the lecture, "Dying with Dementia: Is Hospice the Answer?"

The 2025 Wright Award will be presented on Thursday, November 13, 2025, at the Gerontological Society of America (GSA) Annual Scientific Meeting in Boston, Massachusetts. AFAR will host an awards ceremony and reception, and Dr. Allison will present the lecture, "The Quest for Trustworthy, Probative, and Creative Research in Geroscience."
