Elucidating pathways by which lipid signals modulate longevity, redox metabolism and proteostasis
Lipids have long been assumed to be detrimental to human health. However, it has been shown that some lipids are beneficial for metabolism and aging. A variety of interventions that extend healthy lifespan in worms and fruit flies are associated with fat accumulation. In the proposed research, Dr. Jorge Castillo-Quan will study how lipid signals regulate the aging process by observing this regulation of lipid levels in worms. Dr. Castillo-Quan aims to understand how the transcription factors are activated in response to lipids. This study aims to improve understanding of the specific lipid species involved in promoting healthspan and lifespan, which could possibly provide new insights into lipid-based signaling and longevity assurance.
