Grantee in the News: Ned Sharpless appointed Acting Commissioner of FDA

On March 12, 2019, The New York Times reported that AFAR expert Norman E. (Ned) Sharpless, MD will serve as acting commissioner of the Food and Drug Administration.

Dr. Sharpless is a 2003 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging scholar. He also served on AFAR’s National Scientific Advisory Council from 2005-2011 and chaired the Selection Committee of the Glenn/AFAR Postdoctoral Program for Transnational Research on Aging program in 2015 and 2016.

Dr. Sharpless has been director of the National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute, since October 2017. He is also chief of the aging biology and cancer section in the National Institute on Aging’s Laboratory of Genetics and Genomics.
