On September 23rd, 2026, The Standard featured insights from AFAR Grantee and Upstate Nathan Shock Center Director Vera Gorbunova, PhD, on Sirtuin 6, a protein involved in DNA repair, as a potential target to treat or delay age-related diseases and extend healthspan.
In the article, Dr. Gorbunova drew on her research into long-lived mammals, highlighting the potential role of Sirtuin 6 in longevity and healthy aging, while emphasizing the need for further research and rigorous testing on SIRT6-targeting interventions in humans.
Dr. Gorbunova is a 2005 AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient, as well as the Director of the Upstate Nathan Shock Center, part of the Nathan Shock Centers Coordinating Center that AFAR helps lead for the NIA/NIH.
