The regulation of mitochondrial NAD+ metabolism in the aging heart
Older adults often experience decreased heart function that can lead to shortness of breath, reduced ability to exercise and fatigue. Therefore, drugs that can improve heart function can also significantly improve their quality of life. Continuous pumping and refilling of the heart require a lot of energy from metabolism, which slows down as we age. Nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+) is a cofactor that is essential for energy generation in the powerhouse of the cell, named mitochondria. In this study, Dr. Chiao will investigate how the levels of NAD+ in the mitochondria are regulated in the aging heart. The results of this study can lead to the identification of new targets to enhance energy metabolism and improve heart function in older adults.
