Grantees in the News: New research co-authored by Jason Butler, PhD, and Pradeep Ramalingam, MD, PhD, on the connection between thrombospondin-1 and age-related chronic inflammation in Science Immunology

On January 3rd, 2025, Science Immunology published work co-authored by two AFAR Grantees Jason Butler, PhD, and Pradeep Ramalingam, MD, PhD, on the connection between thrombospondin-1 and age-related chronic inflammation called “inflammaging”.

As Dr. Butler shares in a related University of Florida College of Medicine press release, “We set out to determine if we could fully preserve and rejuvenate blood stem cell function during the course of aging, a goal that had remained largely elusive so far.” On the possible significance of this research Dr. Ramalingam noted, “Protecting the blood and vascular systems by blocking thrombospondin-1 could potentially allow patients to recover faster.”

Dr. Butler is a 2014 AFAR Research Grant for Junior Faculty recipient.

Dr. Ramalingam is a 2021 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Postdoctoral Fellowships in Aging Research recipient.
