On July 11, 2019, Medscape featured insights of AFAR experts Thomas Perls, MD, and S. Jay Olshansky, PhD in an article debunking alternative medicine promoted by Mr. Robert Ledda and Cenegenics Medical Institute.
In the article, Dr. Perls and Olshansky defend research backed by clinical trials to disprove the alternative medicine Ledda promotes. The article also mentions the AFAR-managed TAME Trial as an example of future research that may provide the data often desired by those who seek out alternative medicine.
Dr. Perls is a 1998 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award recipient. He is the Founder and Director of the New England Centenarian Study and a Professor of Medicine at Boston University’s School of Medicine.
Dr. Olshanksy is on AFAR’s Board of Directors, and a 2016 Irving S. Wright Award recipient. He is currently a Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Research Associate at the Center on Aging at the University of Chicago and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Chief Scientist at Lapetus Solutions, Inc.
