On January 25, 2023, The Washington Post featured insights from AFAR Scientific Director Nir Barzilai, MD, AFAR Board Member S. Jay Olshansky, PhD, and AFAR grantee Jamie Justice, PhD, on what factors may contribute to longevity and increased healthspan.
The article also spotlights the SuperAgers Family Study, which aims to gather the largest research cohort of individuals age 95+ to provide a basis for understanding the biological and genetic underpinnings of exceptional longevity as part of the SuperAgers Initiative.
In addition to serving as AFAR’s Scientific Director, Dr. Barzilai is a 1994 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient, a 1997 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging scholar, a 2010 Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction recipient, and the Director at the Institute for Aging Research and distinguished Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
Dr. Justice is 2022 Vincent Cristofalo Rising Star Award in Aging Research. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Internal Medicine, Gerontology & Geriatric Medicine at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, Sticht Center for Healthy Aging and Alzheimer’s Prevention, the Jarrahi Research Scholar in Geroscience Innovation at Wake Forest, and co-leads the Integrative Biology Core of the Wake Forest Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center.
Dr. Olshansky is an AFAR Board Member and 2016 Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction recipient. He is currently a Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, a Research Associate at the Center on Aging at the University of Chicago and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and the Chief Scientist at Lapetus Solutions, Inc.
