Experts in the News: Multiple AFAR experts featured in new CBS Sunday Morning special, “Forever Young: Searching for the Fountain of Youth”

On November 29, 2021, CBS Sunday Morning hosted an special primetime special, "Forever Young: Searching for the Fountain of Youth," hosted by Emmy-award winning journalist Jane Pauley. Several AFAR experts are featured: Senior Scientific Director Steven Austad, PhD, Scientific Director Nir Barzilai, MD, Board Member David Sinclair, PhD, and AFAR grantees Morgan Levine, PhD, Valter Longo, PhD, and Thomas Perls, MD, MPH.

The special highlights some of the latest breakthroughsin aging research, including segments on targeting the underlying biology of agingand the hallmarks of aging to extend healthspan, the potential impactof the Mediterranean diet and intermittent fasting, translating researchin animals to humans, sex differences in aging processes, and centenarian research.

The special, and related web resources, also highlights the upcoming AFAR-managed TAME Trial.

About the Featured AFAR Experts

Dr. Austad is also the Protective Life Endowed Chair in Healthy Aging Research, a Distinguished Professor, and Chair of the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the founding director of UAB’s Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging and co-director of the UAB Integrative Center for Aging Research. He is the author of the book Why We Age, and his latest book, Methuselah’s Zoo: what nature can teach us about living longer, healthier lives is due out in 2022.

Dr. Barzilai is a 1994 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient, a 1997 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging scholar, a 2010 Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction recipient, and the Director at the Institute for Aging Research and distinguished Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Levine is a 2021 Vincent Cristofalo Rising Star Award in Aging Research recipient and has served as a member of the National Scientific Advisory Council (NSAC) since 2020. She is also an Assistant Professor of Pathology and Epidemiology (Chronic Diseases) in the School of Medicine at Yale University.

Dr. Longo is a 1998 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient, as well as a 2013 Vincent Cristofalo Rising Star Award in Aging Research recipient. He is also the Edna M. Jones Professor of Gerontology and a Professor of Biological Sciences at the Leonard Davis School at the University of Southern California.

Dr. Perls is a 1998 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award recipient. He is the Founder and Director of the New England Centenarian Study and a Professor of Medicine at Boston University’s School of Medicine.

Dr. Sinclair is an AFAR board member, a 2000 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient, and a 2018 Irving S. Wright Award recipient. He is also a Professor in the Department of Genetics and co-Director of the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Aging at Harvard Medical School.
