Experts in the News: Jason Karlawish and Mark Lachs discuss the development of the Interview for Decisional Abilities (IDA) in The New York Times

On May 9, 2022, The New York Times featured insights from AFAR Board Member Mark Lachs, MD, MPH, and AFAR Beeson scholar Jason Karlawish, MD, discussing the development of the Interview for Decisional Abilities (IDA) tool. The IDA is designed to help Adult Protection Service workers determine if patients can make decisions about their medical care, aiming to prevent the abuse, neglect, and exploitation of older people.

Dr. Karlawish is a 2000 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging recipient, and a Professor of Medicine at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania.

Dr. Lachs is the AFAR Immediate Past Board President, a 1995 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging recipient, and a 2017 Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction recipient. He is also the Director of Geriatrics for The New York Presbyterian Health Care System, as well as the Co-Chief of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine and the Irene and Roy Psaty Distinguished Professor of Medicine at the Weill Cornell Medical College.
