On June 16, 2020, US News and World Report published an Op Ed co-authored by AFAR expert Nir Barzilai, MD, on why those suffering from age-related chronic diseases are more vulnerable to COVID-19.
Dr. Barzilai proposes both long- and short-term policies officials could implement to protect this vulnerable population, and highlights the ways geroscience research is working to prevent future pandemics, such as through the upcoming AFAR-funded Targeting Aging With Metformin (TAME) Trial.
Dr. Barzilai is AFAR’s Scientific Director, a 1994 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient, a 1997 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging scholar, a 2010 Irving S. Wright Award winner, and the Director at the Institute for Aging Research and distinguished Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
The Op-Ed is co-authored with Paul Irving, chairman of the Milken Institute Center for the Future of Aging and distinguished scholar in residence at the University of Southern California Davis School of Gerontology.
