On July 31, 2023, the German media outlet DW News published a video report, ‘Anti-aging: Researchers might be closer than you think,’ featuring insights from AFAR Scientific Director Nir Barzilai, MD, on the biology of aging and the importance of aging research at large.
“One of the things that happens when we cross the age of 60 [is that] we’re starting to accumulate disease after disease,” shares Dr. Barzilai, citing age-related diseases such as dementia and cardiovascular disease. Dr. Barzilai then continues to explain the impact of the biology of aging on the progression of age-related disease and how a geroscience-focused approach can target both.
A multiple AFAR grantee, Dr. Barzilai also directs the Institute for Aging Research at the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Human Aging Research, and the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. At Einstein, he is also the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair of Aging Research, a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Genetics, and a member of the Diabetes Research Center and of the Divisions of Endocrinology & Diabetes and Geriatrics.
