On July 28, 2023, GQ published an article featuring insights from AFAR Scientific Director Nir Barzilai, MD, on biological aging and the science behind different ways of determining biological age—from simple fitness tests to tracing epigenetic clocks and molecular biomarkers.
In the article, Barzilai emphasizes the importance of exercise, nutrition, sleep, and social connectivity on helping us live healthier, longer. He also addresses how certain biomarkers can be measured to help determine biological age; AFAR is working to advance such biomarkers through the FAST (Finding Aging biomarkers by Searching existing Trials) Initiative, whichaims to determine which targeted and omics-based biomarker approaches are feasible yet innovative enough to advance development of biomarkers for clinical trials in aging.

A multiple AFAR grantee, Dr. Barzilai also directs the Institute for Aging Research at the Paul F. Glenn Center for the Biology of Human Aging Research, and the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging at Albert Einstein College of Medicine. At Einstein, he is also the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair of Aging Research, a professor in the Departments of Medicine and Genetics, and a member of the Diabetes Research Center and of the Divisions of Endocrinology & Diabetes and Geriatrics.
