AFAR in the News: AFAR featured in Jane Brody’s New York Times column on Healthy Aging

On February 1, 2016, in her popular Well column in The New York Times, Jane E. Brody spotlighted AFAR in the feature, “Pursuing the Goal of Healthy Aging.” This piece also featured Scientific Director Steven Austad, PhD, Deputy Scientific Director Nir Barzilai, MD, board members James Kirkland, MD, PhD, and S. Jay Olshansky, PhD, as well as two-time grantee Sofiya Milman, MD.

The article described how AFAR and our affiliated scientists seek to compress morbidity by identifying drugs that can slow the rate of aging and costly development of chronic disease, framing the larger goal and health and socioeconomic impact of the TAME (Taming Aging with Metformin) trial that AFAR is helping spearhead.
Brody describes the biomedical research that AFAR champions as “new approach to healthier aging, which may –or may not-- be accompanied by longer life.”

Brody also highlighted the new research book “Aging: The Longevity Dividend” co-edited by Kirkland and Olshansky with AFAR Scientific Director Emeritus George M. Martin, MD, that features essays a range of AFAR board members and grantees.
