2011 AFAR Grantee Conference

On Monday, June 13th, AFAR wrapped up a day of presentation and discussion as part of the 24th annual AFAR Grantee Conference in Santa Barbara, CA, where grantees gathered to share their research and develop relationships with other scientists in the field. Speakers included Leanne Jones, PhD, recipient of a 2006 AFAR Research Grant, who gave the opening keynote talk highlighting her research on age-related changes in the stem cell niche. Chair of the Research Committee, Steve Austad, PhD, provided a wide lens with which to think about aging, giving a broad history of where we’ve been and where we are with human health. Recipients of the Julie Martin Mid-Career and BIG Awards also presented their AFAR-funded projects to the group, discussing new research from naked mole rats to mTOR signaling. And sessions on funding in the field provided guidance for grant applications in the private and public sector.

70 people attended the conference, which included a poster session for grant recipients to present their recent work and discuss connections with peers and senior researchers, encouraging possible scientific and professional collaborations in the future.
