On July 18th, 2024, CBS News Bay Area aired a segment highlighting AFAR’s SuperAger Family Study and its potential impact on age-related diseases. Study participant Charlotte Goode and Principal Investigator Sofiya Milman, MD, MS, shared their insights.
Ms. Goode hopes that participating in this study by providing a DNA sample could lead scientists to findings that could benefit future generations.
Dr. Milman highlighted the study's potential to influence future treatments aimed at extending healthspan and addressing age-related illnesses. “We want to understand what variations of genes are beneficial so that ultimately, we create new therapies and medications that can mimic the function of these beneficial genes so that those of us who did not inherit these protective, beneficial genes can still benefit from this research," said Dr. Milman.

Led by AFAR in collaboration with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and the Boston University School of Medicine, the Super Agers Family Study aims to collect data from a large group of individuals who have lived to age 95 or more, as well as their offspring and offspring’s spouse. The Study seeks to understand and uncover the biological factors contributing to healthy aging and exceptional longevity shared among SuperAgers and their families.
