Board Member in the News: New research co-authored by Ana Maria Cuervo on protective role of autophagy against heart attacks and strokes in The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

On April 1, 2022, The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciencespublished new research co-authored by AFAR Board Member Ana Maria Cuervo, MD, PhD, which successfully minimized artery-narrowing plaque by boosting chaperone-mediated autophagy (CMA) in mice, protecting against atherosclerosis, a major cause of heart attacks and strokes.

Dr. Cuervo is a 2000 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient and a 2008 Vincent Cristofalo Rising Star Award in Aging Research recipient. She is also the Leader of the Proteostasis of Aging Core at the Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, the Robert and Renee Belfer Chair for the Study of Neurodegenerative Diseases, and a Professor in the Departments of Developmental & Molecular Biology and Medicine (Hepatology) at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
