AFAR Experts in the News: President, Thomas A. Rando, MD, PhD, and Grantee Anthony J. Covarrubias, PhD, on regenerative medicine in UC Health article

On August 14th, 2025, UCLA Health published an article on regenerative medicine, featuring insights from AFAR President Thomas A. Rando, MD, PhD, and AFAR Grantee Anthony J. Covarrubias, PhD.

In the article, Dr. Rando spoke on the field at large and his own research into muscle regenerative through stem cell therapies.

Dr. Covarrubias discusses his AFAR-supported research on inflammaging: “I thought it was really fascinating that chronic inflammation can be a major driver of not just diseases like cancer and diabetes, but even the aging process.”

Dr. Covarrubias is a 2022 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient.

In addition to being the President of AFAR’s Board of Directors, Dr. Rando is a 2008 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Breakthroughs in Gerontology (BIG) Award recipient, and a 1999 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging recipient.
