Reprogram aged CD8 T cells to reverse immunosenescence
CD8 T cells are a type of T lymphocytes and are essential for our immune system to fight infections. However, as we age, CD8 T cells become less effective in controlling infections. As a result, the risk of infection-related hospitalizations and deaths increases with age. In addition, vaccines are less protective in older adults. We recently discovered a type of CD8 T cells termed “stem cell-like CD8 T cells”. These stem cell-like CD8 T cells have longer lifespan and are more effective in combating infections. Here, Dr. Wu will evaluate strategies to reverse age-driven decline in CD8 T cell immunity by reprograming aged CD8 T cells into stem cell-like CD8 T cells. The results from this study will help develop novel interventions to improve the immunity against infections in older adults.
