Characteristics causes and consequences of interoceptive dysfunction in aging

One of the most common afflictions in aging is the decline of cognitive function, and it can significantly reduce the quality of life of many older individuals. This process is highly heterogenous, and it is challenging to predict the extent, onset, and likelihood of age-associated cognitive impairment. Dr. Salvador hypothesizes that peripheral factors delivered to the brain through neural and humoral routes are influencing age-related brain aging and memory loss. Her research aims to unravel the disruptions of body to brain pathways in aging, and its contribution to age-related cognitive impairment. Through this project, she hopes to discover new insights that can lead to peripheral interventions that promote brain resilience in old age, and to highlight the importance body-brain communication in healthy aging.
