Special Briefings

On October 21, 2025, AFAR hosted the Webinar, "The Potential of Geroscience: from Economic Gains to Social Returns and Ethical Concerns."

Boston Globe Ideas Editor Brian Bergstein moderated a discussion on the economic gains, health rewards, and social returns that geroscience can generate. AFAR President Thomas A. Rando, MD, PhD, and AFAR Scholar-in-Residence Raiany Romanni, PhD, shared their perspectives on biology, bioethics, economics, and innovation, exploring biomedical research, social planning, and the socioeconomic impact of geroscience.

On September 22, 2025, AFAR and the Academy for Health and Lifespan Research (AHLR) hosted "The State of Gerotherapeutics: Next Gen Interventions to Extend Healthy Living."

New York Times health reporter Dana G. Smith, PhD, moderated a discussion with Nir Barzilai, MD (President, Academy of Health and Lifespan Research); Rafael de Cabo, PhD (Chief, Translational Gerontology Branch of the National Institute on Aging); Sara Espinoza, MD (Director, Center for Translational Geroscience at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center); Kristen Fortney, PhD (CEO and Co-Founder, BioAGE Labs); and Carolina Solis-Herrera, MD (Division Chief & Associate Professor, Division of Endocrinology, UT Health San Antonio School of Medicine).

These renowned leaders from the academic, clinical, and private sectors clarified how both repurposing existing drugs and developing novel compounds can extend healthspan; unpacked the need for human trials, the importance of an FDA indication for aging, as well as the risks in off-label use and harm of radical life extension claims; counter myths and misinformation with accurate expectations; explored how drug and lifestyle interventions work together to extend healthspan; and more.

On October 22, 2024, AFAR hosted the webinar, “How Realistic is a 100-Year Life Expectancy, and Why Does it Matter?”

This discussion delved into a recent paper published in Nature Aging, titled “Implausibility of Radical Life Extension in Humans in the 21st Century.” The paper, co-authored by public health and gerontology expert S. Jay Olshansky, PhD, explores the limits to human lifespan and the far-reaching impact of extending healthspan through biomedical research on aging. Thanks to AFAR’s support, this publication is available open access here.

Olshansky was joined by longevity global economist Andrew J. Scott, DPhil, whose recent book, The Longevity Imperative, argues that in order to accommodate existing trends and future growth in longevity, substantial changes to our health system, economy, and financial sector—as well as in how we manage our careers, health, finances, and relationships—are necessary.

AFAR Scientific Director Steven N. Austad, PhD, moderated.
