Whole brain dynamics in aging C. elegans

In the proposed study, Dr. Vivek Venkatachalam will study the brains of the worm C. elegans to observe activity patterns that guide behavior and see how those activity patterns change with age. His lab will do this by using modern neuronal recording technology to monitor the activity of each neuron in an individual worm’s brain. By comparing the activity changes on sensory neuron, interneuron, and motor neuron levels, they plan to create a more complete picture of the effect of age on brain activity and behavior. This more complete picture could show a link between genetics and disrupted neuronal activity, and by doing that, allow them to identify specific genes that affect brain decline.
