Neuroinflammation in older adults with HIV: A single cell approach

While advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART) have decreased rates of HIV-associated dementia, the prevalence of all neurocognitive disorders in adults with HIV has not changed. 50% of adults with HIV on ART have some form of neurocognitive impairment. Chronic HIV is associated with persistent immune activation in the central nervous system, although the cellular mechanisms that cause this immune response are not fully understood. In the proposed research, Dr. Farhadian will investigate the relationship between HIV, immune cell response, and neurocognitive impairment in older adults with HIV infection. The goal of this study is to identify new interventions to prevent or treat neurological damage caused by HIV and other infections.
