On August 31, 2019 , the Associated Press featured insights from S. Jay Olshansky, PhD, in an article on the longevity and healthspan of the 2020 election candidates. The article cites his 2011 research , “Aging of US Presidents,” which found that 23 of 34 presidents who had died of natural causes lived beyond the average life expectancy of men the same age when they were inaugurated. The AP feature has been picked up considerably nationwide, including such high profile outlets as ABC News and The New York Times.
The article is inspired by Dr. Olshansky’s recent AFAR-published whitepaper, “Longevity and Health of U.S. Presidential Candidates for the 2020 Election."
Dr. Olshanksy is on AFAR’s Board of Directors, and a 2016 Irving S. Wright Award recipient. He is currently a Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, Research Associate at the Center on Aging at the University of Chicago and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and Chief Scientist at Lapetus Solutions, Inc.
