Grantees in the News: Drs. Wesley Ely and Malaz Boustani Featured for Work in Post-ICU Patient Care View MoreBACK

Beeson Scholars E. Wesley Ely, MD, and Malaz Boustani, MD, were featured in a November 25th article in The Wall Street Journal on recent efforts by hospitals to combat the negative effects frequently suffered by patients after their release from the intensive-care unit (ICU).  It is estimated that up to 80% of patients suffer from cognitive or brain dysfunction after a stay in the ICU, and damaging emotional and physical effects are also common.  Many hospitals are taking steps to improve outcomes for ICU patients.  Dr. Ely, a professor at Vanderbilt University, stresses the importance of rehabilitation for ICU survivors and is also working to develop interventions for patients who are still in the ICU.  Dr. Boustani and his team at Indiana University have worked to improve care and attention for ICU patients, and have helped to reduce the number of emergency room visits and hospital readmissions for ICU survivors.

Dr. Ely was a 2001 recipient of the Beeson Career Development Award in Aging Research, and is currently Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt University.  Dr. Boustani was a 2005 Beeson Award recipient, and is currently an Associate Professor of Medicine at Indiana University School of Medicine.
