Grantees in the News: Alex Smith, MD, Publishes Study on Disability Rates in the Last Two Years of Life
On July 8, the New York Times reported that despite advancements in geriatric care, high disability rates persist in the elderly. The report was based on a July 8 study published in JAMA Internal Medicine. The study, led by Beeson Scholar Dr. Alex Smith, used 15 years’ worth of data from the national Health and Retirement study to analyze rates of disability in peoples’ final two years of life. Researchers concluded that those who live longest are most likely to be disabled, with women likely to sustain a longer disability period than men. Dr. Alex Smith is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco. You can read more about him here.
