On July 8, 2019, TODAY featured insights AFAR expert Thomas Perls, MD, MPH, FACP, in an article about Alelia Murphy, the oldest living American.

Ms. Murphy turned 114 on July 6, 2019, and the article explores the phenomenon behind supercentenarians, or people who are 110 years old or older. Dr. Perl explains the behaviorial and lifestyle choices that influence living into your 80s and beyond.

Dr. Perls is a 1998 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award recipient. He is the Founder and Director of the New England Centenarian Study and a Professor of Medicine at Boston University’s School of Medicine.
