Grantee in the News: COE Investigators Cited In NYT Opinion Piece on the Geriatrician Shortage View MoreBACK

On September 22nd, two Center of Excellence investigators, Rosanne Leipzig, MD, PhD, and David Reuben, MD, were featured in The New York Times Opinion Pages in a piece highlighting the geriatrician shortage.

While older adults who are monitored by a geriatrician enjoy more years of independent living, greater social and physical functioning and lower presence of disease, there are currently fewer 8,000 geriatrician’s nationwide, the piece article notes.Dr. Leipzig refers to geriatricians as an “endangered species” and Dr. Reuben worries that the shortage could result in a national crisis as the population continues to age.

Rosanne Leipzig, MD, PhD, is a Professor of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine at Mount Sinai Hospital.

David Reuben, MD, is a Geriatric Specialist at the University of California, Los Angles.
