On September 17, 2019, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society published research co-authored by AFAR experts Stefania Maggi, PhD, and Toby Smith, PhD, which suggests that individuals with osteoarthritis may be at greater risk of social isolation.

Dr. Maggi is an AFAR board member, the Research Director of the CNR Aging Brach-Institute of Neuroscience in Padua, the Director of the CNR Project on Aging, and the Academic Director and Past-President of the European Geriatric Medicine Society.

Dr. Smith is a 2002 Medical Student Training in Aging Research (MSTAR) recipient, and is the Senior Research in Rehabilitation at the Nuffield Department of Orthopaedics, Rheumatology, and Musculoskeletal Sciences.
