Board Member in the News: Steven Austad Comments on Caloric Restriction

On April 7, 2016, The Irish Times featured comments from Scientific Director Steven Austad, PhD on the scientific evidence in support of a relationship between increased lifespan and calorie restrictive diets.

Proven to increase longevity in multiple animal models, caloric restriction has long been an interest for researchers investigating the biology of aging. Although calorie restriction has not been clinically tested in humans, evidence has found calorie restrictive diets, at the very least, lowers risk factors for cardiovascular disease, Austad notes.

Steven Austad, PhD, is a Distinguished Professor and Department Chair at the University of Alabama, Birmingham.
