AFAR in the News: AFAR whitepaper by S. Jay Olshansky on healthspan of 2020 candidates in JAMA Network View MoreBACK

On September 11, 2019, JAMA Network spotlighted the recent research-backed whitepaper by AFAR expert S. Jay Olshansky, PhD,  arguing how healthspan matters more than age when considering a presidential candidate.

Referencing the AFAR-published whitepaper, Longevity and Health of US Presidential Candidates for the 2020 Election, the article reinforces the whitepaper’s emphasis on healthspan, not chronological age.

“Given the candidates’ favorable health and longevity forecasts,” the article states, “‘there is reason to question whether age should be used at all in making judgments about prospective presidential candidates.’”

Dr. Olshansky is on AFAR’s Board of Directors, and is a 2016 Irving S. Wright Award recipient. He is currently a Professor in the School of Public Health at the University of Illinois at Chicago, a Research Associate at the Center on Aging at the University of Chicago and at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, and is the Chief Scientist at Lapetus Solutions, Inc.
