AFAR in the News: AFAR Pilot Study Funding Opens the Door to Major NIH Grant for Frailty Study
On August 8, 2014, Albert Einstein College of Medicine reported on a 5-year $3.3 million grant received from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for a study entitled, "Role of exceptional longevity genotypes in protection against frailty in aging." Nir Barzilai, M.D., a three-time grantee and AFAR’s Deputy Scientific Director and 2004 Beeson Scholar Joe Verghese, M.D., will serve as the principal investigators.
This study, which will expand efforts to identify gene variants that keep frailty at bay, explore biological pathways that lead to frailty, and develop drugs that mimic the effects of frailty-preventing genes, is based off of the results pilot study funded by AFAR.
Dr. Nir Barzilai is a Professor of Medicine and Genetics at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University. He also serves as the Ingeborg and Ira Leon Rennert Chair in Aging Research Director at the Institute for Aging Research.
Dr. Joe Verghese is a Professor of Medicine at Albert Einstein College of Medicine at Yeshiva University. He also serves as the Division Chief of Geriatrics in the Department of Medicine at Albert Einstein.
By funding investigators at significant points in their career and research, AFAR serves as launching point for studies that yield big results. Read more about AFAR’s most recent group of talented researchers here.
