AFAR is pleased to announce two new members of its Board of Directors: Gareth W. Shepherd, PhD, and Robert W. Stearns. Each brings a unique set of expertise and experience that will help further facilitate and expand AFAR’s continued mission.

Gareth W Shepherd

Dr. Shepherd co-founded G Squared Capital in 2011, that grew to become one of the foremost hedge funds using artificial intelligence and went on to be acquired by Voya Financial, Inc. For the past 18 years he has also greatly contributed to Davos and industry gatherings all over the world while managing relationships with the investors community. He currently co-heads the Voya Machine Intelligence (VMI) group, managing investments and philanthropy that focus on healthy aging, longevity medicine, and biomedical research. He has been honored with a UN Sustainability Award, named as a Global Leadership Fellow of the World Economic Forum, and was an Australian Leadership Awardee.

Mr. Stearns has been a high-tech venture capitalist for over thirty years. He is currently the Managing Director of Sternhill Associates, which he co-founded in 2015 to provide investment capital and consulting services to groundbreaking early-stage companies, in computing, communications, medical instrumentation, and new energy. Aa a senior-level technology executive, he brings deep experience in venture capital investing and has served in various senior technical, marketing and planning roles, both in early-stage private companies and the Fortune 50. He has been involved in over eighty start-up companies, as an employee, investor, and/or board member. He is also an author and frequent speaker on matters related to computing and the Internet, technological innovation, and business policy.
