AFAR is deeply saddened by the passing of Judith "Judy" Campisi, PhD, a premier scientist in the field of aging research. Her dedication to geroscience, innovation, and AFAR was exemplary.
Early in her career in 1990, Dr. Campisi received an AFAR Research Grant for Junior Faculty, supported by the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research. She went onto serve on AFAR's board of Directors from 1999-2002 and received our Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction in 2002. Dr. Campisi also served on and/or chaired several of AFAR's scientific review committees from 1997-2019.
Dr. Campisi was globally recognized not only for her research on aging and cancer, which AFAR spotlighted in our 2013 annual report, but also for advancing our understanding of senescence and senolytics, which AFAR featured in our 2016 annual report. Dr. Campisi shared her insights with AFAR in an Ask the Expert interview, and she appeared among the leading researchers that AFAR curated into the 2018 national PBS special, Incredible Aging.
Dr. Campisi was a Professor and Director of the Campisi Lab at the Buck Institute for Aging Research, as well as Adjunct Faculty at the USC Leonard Davis School of Gerontology.
She was co-founder of Unity Biotech and served on the editorial board of the peer-reviewed journal, Aging.
She was elected to the esteemed National Academy of Sciences in 2018.
