Grantee in the News: New research by Matthew D Park, PhD, on cancer risk and aging immune system in Science

On September 5th, 2024, Science published work co-authored by AFAR Grantee Matthew D Park, PhD, on the connection between inflammation caused by an aged immune system and the development of cancer, highlighting the importance of targeting immune system aging to mitigate cancer risk.

As Dr. Parks shares in a relate Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai press release, “As the immune system ages, it triggers harmful inflammation that can drive cancer growth––by promoting the accumulation of pro-tumor macrophages, a type of immune cell that suppresses the immune effector cells that normally kill tumor cells. This weakens the body's ability to fight cancer.”

Dr. Parks is a 2021 recipient of the Diana Jacobs Kalman Scholarship for Research in the Biology of Aging.
