![Experts in the News: Multiple AFAR experts on research behind sex differences and aging in The Philadelphia Inquirer]()
On November 15, 2021, The Philadelphia Inquirer featured insights and research from multiple AFAR experts, including AFAR Senior Scientific Director Steven Austad, PhD, and AFAR grantees Bérénice A. Benayoun, PhD, Dena Dubal, MD, PhD, Caleb Finch, PhD, and Jennifer Garrison, PhD. Their research and/or insights help explain the wide variety of factors that contribute to aging differences between men and women, including related risk factors, chromosomal differences, and hormones.
Dr. Austad is also the Protective Life Endowed Chair in Healthy Aging Research, a Distinguished Professor, and Chair of the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, the founding director of UAB’s Nathan Shock Center of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging and co-director of the UAB Integrative Center for Aging Research. He is the author of the book Why We Age, and his latest book, Methuselah’s Zoo: what nature can teach us about living longer, healthier lives is due out in 2022.
Dr. Benayoun is a 2020 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grant for Junior Faculty recipient, as well as an Assistant Professor of Gerontology and Biological Science at the University of Southern California.
Dr. Dubal is a 1998 Diana Jacobs Kalman/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging recipient, a 2009 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging recipient, and a 2015 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient. She is also an Assistant Professor at the Weill Institute for Neurosciences at the University of California San Francisco.
Dr. Finch is a 1983 recipient of the Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty, and a 1999 recipient of the Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction. He is a Professor and the ARCO/William F. Kieschnick Chair in the Neurobiology of Biology at the University of Southern California.
Dr. Garrison is a 2016 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient, and Assistant Professor at the Buck Institute for Research on Aging, and an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Gerontology at the University of Southern California.
