In mid-February 2024, the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society (JAGS) published four "Letters to the Editor" highlighting the impact of four National Institute on Aging (NIA)-funded initiatives that AFAR plays an important role in: the Nathan Shock Centers Coordinating Center (NSC3), the Research Centers Collaborative Network (RCCN), the Clinician-Scientists Transdisciplinary Aging Research (Clin-STAR) initiative, and the Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Awards in Aging (K76).
Shared for pre-release, these letters are part of the forthcoming May 2024 edition of the JAGS, Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the National Institute on Aging—a special collection that describes the history, impact, and future challenges of several NIA-funded initiatives.
AFAR leadership Steven N. Austad, PhD (Senior Scientific Director), Stephanie Lederman, EdM (Executive Director) and Odette van der Willik (Deputy Executive Director and Director, Grant Programs) co-authored articles, as well as staff Elizabeth Pritchett-Montavon, MPA (Program Officer) and Andrea N. Sherman, MS (Clin-STAR Program Officer).
AFAR leads the NSC3, and Clin-STAR initiatives and co-leads the RCCN; in addition AFAR has a R13 grant to organize the annual meeting of the Beeson (K76) program, a program that was initially launched in 1994 by The John A. Hartford Foundation, Atlantic Philanthropies, The Commonwealth Fund, AFAR, and the Alliance for Aging Research.
