AFAR in the News: SuperAgers Family Study, Principal Investigator Sofiya Milman, MD, and 96-year-old Study Participant featured in The Philadelphia Inquirer
On August 24, 2023, The Philadelphia Inquirer featured insights from Sofiya Milman, MD, MS, on the SuperAgers Family Study and the science behind exceptional longevity. Dr. Milman is the Prinicipal Investigator of the SuperAgers Family Study, which is a multi-year strategic initiative of AFAR.
In the article “Meet the 96-year-old Philly geneticist who wants you to know ‘SuperAgers’ are ‘not old and decrepit or whatever,’” Dr. Milman shares the aims of the SuperAgers Family Study and its potential impact. “We want to understand what helps people to live not only long lives, but also healthy lives,” explains Dr. Milman. “We can use the information we glean to create drugs and therapeutics that will mimic the function of beneficial genes [and] expand the number of healthy years for older adults.”
The article also highlights a 96-year-old geneticist, Hope Punnett, who is currently enrolled in the Study. “Having been in human research, I know how hard it can be to find volunteers,” shares Punnett. “[Besides], people should be aware that people my age are not old and decrepit or whatever.”
