AFAR in the News: Steven Austad, Nir Barzilai, and James Kirkland discuss how the TAME Trial, senolytics, and gerotherapeutics can increase healthspan in The Washington Post

On March 6, 2021, The Washington Post featured insights from our Scientific leadership Steven N. Austad, PhD, Nir Barzilai, MD, and James L. Kirkland, MD, PhD, in a Health section cover story examining how senolytics and gerotherapeutics, such as metformin and rapamycin, can extend healthspan, or increase our years of healthy life.

The article also prominently highlights the AFAR-managed TAME Trial, which will study metformin to provide proof of concept that the biology of aging can be targeted.

Dr. Austad is AFAR’s Senior Scientific Director. He is also a distinguished professor and Chair of the Department of Biology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, as well as Co-Principle Investigator of the Nathan Shock Centers of Excellence in the Basic Biology of Aging Coordinating Center.

Dr. Barzilai is AFAR’s Scientific Director, a 1994 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research and AFAR Grants for Junior Faculty recipient, a 1997 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging scholar, a 2010 Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction recipient, and the Director at the Institute for Aging Research and distinguished Professor at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Kirkland is AFAR’s Board President, a 2012 Glenn Foundation for Medical Research Breakthroughs in Gerontology (BIG) Award recipient, and a 2020 Irving S. Wright Award of Distinction recipient. He is also a distinguished Professor of Medicine and Physiology, as well as the Director at the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at the Mayo Clinic College of Medicine.
