On August 23, 2021, AFAR and Wake Forest School of Medicine received a renewal award for up to $5 million over five years from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) to continue our management of the Research Centers Collaborative Network (RCCN).
Established in 2018, the RCCN brings together scientists from six NIA center programs focused on addressing a wide range of issues affecting older adults, and aims to spur multidisciplinary efforts in aging research across the NIA centers through five complementary strategies.
With the renewal award, the RCCN will expand the scope of the workshops and pilot award programs, and will develop a new RCCN scholars program to provide on-going support for early career investigators as well as initiate new processes to promote cross-disciplinary research and expand collaboration.
"In its first three years, the RCCN has encouraged in-depth conversations and interconnected collaborations in aging research, and has funded 7 projects to advance science at the intersection between disciplines" notes Stephen B. Kritchevsky, Co-PI of the RCCN Coordinating Center. "Through this renewal award, the RCCN is poised to help expand discussions across disciplines and further engage the leadership of the NIA Centers."
AFAR is primarily responsible for the administrative functioning of the network. Wake Forest School of Medicine co-manages the RCCN and is primarily be responsible for the network’s scientific endeavors and outreach to the research community.
