AFAR Grantees in the News: LeBrasseur and Okonkwo on the benefits of exercise for healthy aging in Wall Street Journal


On June 12, 2023, The Wall Street Journal featured insights from AFAR grantees Nathan LeBrasseur, PhD, MS, and Ozioma Okonkwo, PhD, in an article discussing the benefits of regular exercise in promoting healthy aging.

In “The Simple Way to Fight Aging, According to Experts,” Dr. LeBrasseur and Dr. Okonkwo discuss their research on how regular exercise can help increase lifespan and healthspan by preventing various age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, cancer, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease. The article also explores the additional benefits of exercise that may help improve immune function, reduced inflammation, increased insulin sensitivity, increase cerebral blood flow, and increase brain glucose metabolism.

Dr. LeBrasseur is an AFAR 2002 Glenn/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging recipient, 2019 Vincent Cristofalo Rising Star Award in Aging Research recipient, and Chair of the Diana Jacobs Kalman/AFAR Scholarships for Research in the Biology of Aging Selection Committee. Additionally, he is the Director of the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at the Mayo Clinic, and the Consultant, Professor, and Co-Chair of Research in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Mayo Clinic.


Dr. Okonkwo is an AFAR 2013 Paul B. Beeson Emerging Leaders Career Development Award in Aging recipient and an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health.
