Launching the Longevity Dividend

In October, AFAR in collaboration with the Gerontological Society of America, launched the special issue of the Public Policy and Aging Report, The Longevity Dividend: Geroscience Meets Geropolitics with a standing-room only media briefing at the annual GSA conference.
Earlier that month, an AFAR-funded study was published in Health Affairs, co-authored by board member S. Jay Olshansky, on the economic and social benefits of delaying aging, or the Longevity Dividend.
Watch AFAR Immediate Past President Roger J. McCarter explain the importance and impact of this initiative in a video here.
Can We Delay Aging?
In November, AFAR and Science Writers in New York co-hosted an expert panel discussion, Can We Delay Aging? featuring AFAR Deputy Scientific Director Nir Barzali, PhD, AFAR Deputy Medical Officer Caroline Blaum, MD, and former AFAR grantee Ana Maria Cuervo, MD, PhD, moderated by AFAR board member Kevin Lee. The event attracted nearly 50 journalists and led to an article on elder pharmacology by Barzali in The Scientist.

Grants Process Enhanced
In response to the recent upswing of applications to our Biology of Aging programs, AFAR has implemented a new three-stage grant review modeled on the Ellison Medical Foundation's procedures to more efficiently engage our dedicated reviewers. AFAR is grateful for the generous amount of time and insight our Committee members contribute to ensure we are supporting top talent. View a full list of our Scientific Committees here.
Welcome to the Board
AFAR welcomes Harvey Jay Cohen, MD, as our new President of the Board of Directors, as well as Steven Austad, PhD, as our new Scientific Director and Nir Barzali, PhD, as Deputy Scientific Director.
We also welcome Michael Hodin, PhD, Executive Director of the Global Coalition on Aging, to our board.
