Electroencephalogram-based Brain Age and its Relation with Cognitive Function and Sleep Quality

The concept of brain age as an aging biomarker is emerging, but currently there is no brain age biomarker that is accessible and practical for use in assessing the effectiveness of interventions. Dr. M Brandon Westover's lab is developing a way to measure brain age from the types of brainwaves one has during sleep. They are also researching how sleep problems affect brain health and creating computer programs that can measure brain health, so that they can track how well treatments work.

The goal of this study is to develop an accessible, economical, and practical marker of brain age to identify individuals with increased risk of age-related cognitive impairment as well as possibly provide more accurate predictions of functional capability, brain function and lifespan than chronological age alone. This also could provide an improved understanding of mechanisms of aging as well as the relationship between sleep disruption and brain aging.
