Molecular Basis of Metformin Action in Treating Age-Related Disease

Aging increases the risk of multiple chronic diseases including type II diabetes, obesity, and atherosclerosis. Preventive therapies that compress morbidity in older age are needed to maintain independence and improve quality of life during these years. Metformin is a safe, FDA-approved drug that improves glycemic control and has shown promise in curbing multiple age-related diseases. Despite these benefits, the molecular basis of metformin's therapeutic effects is unclear. The aim of my project is to determine the molecular target and primary tissue site of action of metformin. This knowledge will inform future efforts to develop gerotherapeutics that combat age-related decline.
