Identifying genes that regulate mitochondrial positioning at the synapse during aging

Mitochondria (the cell’s “powerhouses”) undergo changes in their morphology, motility, and activity in response to physiological or pathological condition to satisfy local demand for energy and to maintain cellular homeostasis. Proper regulation of mitochondrial dynamics and activity is critical for neuronal function, in particular the response of neurons to injury, age, and other stresses. Dr. Han’s proposed research aims to provide a new understanding of the mechanisms that maintain optimal function of the nervous system during aging by regulating mitochondrial function in aging/stressed neurons.
