Identification of inter-cellular signaling axes that suppress senescent cell clearance by macrophages

The accumulation of senescent cells is a hallmark of aging in all tissues and contributes to the progression of aging-related pathologies. However, the fundamental biological causes of senescent cell accrual in aged tissues are unknown. Dr. Kamber’s AFAR-supported research aims to identify the inter-cellular signaling pathways that mediate senescent cell evasion of macrophage-mediated phagocytosis, a major endogenous mechanism for senescent cell elimination. Successful completion of this work will generate new knowledge of the molecular mechanisms that perturb tissue homeostasis in aging organisms and suggest new strategies for therapeutic targeting of senescent cells.
