Defining the role of co-transitional proteostasis in aging and age-related pathologies
One of the defining hallmarks of aging is the cell’s inability to maintain a functional proteome. Generating and maintaining functional proteins is vital to all cellular functions. Disrupting this process, termed protein homeostasis (proteostasis), causes proteins to misfold and aggregate, which then helps drive the progression of aging and neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Stein’s research aims to dissect the mechanisms of quality control of newly-synthesized proteins, which could help reveal the determinants of the age-related proteostasis collapse and thus elucidate the etiology of aging and neurodegeneration.
