Mapping the Spatial-Temporal Patterns of Normal Brain Aging Using Multi-Site T1w Structural MRI and AI-Driven CBV Analysis

A major challenge in understanding brain aging is capturing both structural and functional changes. Dr. Guo's project integrates routine T1-weighted (T1w) MRI with artificial intelligence to create cerebral blood volume (CBV) maps—without needing contrast agents. By combining structural information from T1w MRI with AI-derived CBV (AICBV), Dr. Guo and his lab aim to pinpoint the brain’s most vulnerable and resilient regions across a diverse, lifespan-spanning population. They will also develop predictive “brain age” models to identify individuals whose brains are aging more quickly—or more slowly—than expected. This approach has the potential to transform neuroimaging by making functional scans more accessible and cost-effective, ultimately guiding personalized interventions that promote healthy brain aging and preserve cognitive function.
