A Chemical Niche to Regenerate and Rejuvenate Cartilage in Osteoarthritis
Dr. Chan’s project which aims to regenerate cartilage to reverse osteoarthritis, is co-funded by AFAR and the Arthritis National Research Foundation. Dr. Chan’s lab looks specifically at the skeletal stem cell (SSC) and whether it is possible to reactivate the body’s own SSCs to regenerate lost cartilage by restoring the stem cell microenvironment or “niche.” If one could restore the SSC’s “niche” with specific factors, it could also lead to better stem cell function, including formation of lost tissues. This approach may also work for other types of tissues such as heart, brain, skin, or muscles, which are all adversely affected by aging.
